ABOUT BIOBANK

The IMT Biobank-USP was created in 2014 and is available for samples of types of human materials like tissues, blood serum, RNA, DNA, among others, according to the National Health Council standards.

The IMT-USP Biobank is installed on the premises of the Institute.

The Biobank aims to store biological materials, such as tissues, cells, body fluids and genetic material of samples from laboratories of this Institute, previously approved by the Research Committee and ethics of IMT and by the Research Ethics Committee of the medical school of the University of São Paulo (FMUSP ZIP CODE), or by the Ethics Committee for review of research projects of the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (CAPPesq).

Alternatively, the Biobank may incorporate biological material collected initially for performing diagnostic tests. After use the biological material for this purpose, and fulfilled the legal deadline to be requested contra-provas of diagnostic tests performed, the biological material shall be part of the acquis of the Biobank, since that has been explicitly allowed by the application of informed consent.

The structure of the IMT Biobank-USP presents so far 5,000 biological samples (data for December 2014).

5. After I deposit the samples to the Biobank of the IMT, as the samples will be used in research projects?

Any researcher can only have access to the samples stored in the Biobank after your research project be approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the IMT. This Committee ensures compliance with the ethical principles existing in brazilian legislation and must be followed by every researcher who uses samples of human beings of Biobanks.

The samples should be stored in appropriate conditions for proper preservation being: blood, serum, DNA and RNA at -80° C and other samples with specific characteristics should be stored at -196° c.

7. What criteria for use of samples in research?
